Mid-level Associate

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with a minimum of 4 years of experience in real property transactions and litigation and/or trusts and estate planning and is looking to join our team and create a long-term career with our Firm. In this role, you will be working primarily on real estate matters while also building experience in matters related to Colorado water law. Additionally, if the successful candidate has experience with wills and trusts, you may assist in meeting the increasing and developing demand the firm has seen for will and estate related legal matters. Many of our clients have been with our firm for years, if not decades, and include special districts, special corporations, ditch companies, water users’ associations, farmers, ranchers, municipalities, and individual water users and landowners. In this role, you will be positioned to have a significant impact while also gaining valuable experience and benefit from working with colleagues. Must be licensed to practice law in Colorado.

Specifically, the position involves a client-centered practice that includes:

  • Providing real estate counsel to clients regarding acquisition or sale of real property, easements and/or water rights;
  • Representing clients in real property disputes and litigation, including disputes involving ditch easements;
  • Drafting purchase and sale agreements, leases, deeds, and other instruments;
  • Performing detailed review of title documents;
  • Quieting title to real property and water rights;
  • Meeting with clients to understand their estate planning goals and advising them on achieving those goals;
  • Handling trust and estate matters with minimal supervision, including drafting wills, trusts, powers of attorney;
  • Supporting the firm’s water rights law and litigation practice;
  • Experience in entity formation and general business matters a plus;
  • Supervising or providing day to day direction for a legal assistant, or delegating work and projects to support staff.

Requirements:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school; and Admission to practice in the State of Colorado.
  • Must have 4+ years of relevant experience in real estate and/or estate planning with an interest in learning about Colorado water law.
  • Real estate transaction and litigation experience strongly preferred.
  • Commitment to helping manage the relationships and legal needs of clients.
  • Skilled in legal research and writing.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to problem-solve and participate in team problem-solving.
  • Promptly respond to common inquiries from colleagues, staff, and clients.
  • Effectively present complex information to judges, administrative agencies, colleagues, public groups, and boards and commissions.

The Firm offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a base salary range starting at $110,000-$130,000. depending on experience, plus quarterly bonuses based on billables and collections. Entry-level Associate

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with 1-3 years of experience in water law matters looking to join a team devoted to water rights law and litigation and related practice areas. Representative clients include special districts, ditch companies, water users’ associations, farmers, ranchers, municipalities, and individual water users and landowners. In this role, you will be positioned to have a significant impact while also gaining valuable experience and benefit from working with colleagues who are ambitious, hard-working, and who believe in having lives outside work. Must be licensed to practice law in Colorado.

Specifically, the position involves a client-centered practice that includes:

  • Advising clients in the acquisition and protection of water rights and real property;
  • Navigating water court and state agency processes;
  • Adjudicating, negotiating and litigating applications for surface and groundwater water rights,
     storage rights, plans for augmentation, changes of water rights, recharge projects and exchanges;
  • Working through and with the Division of Water Resources to obtain substitute water supply plans and resolve well permit issues;
  • Preparing and completing water rights purchase and sale transactions and other related real estate transactional matters;
  • Preparing and drafting leases, easements, articles and bylaws, and other water and real estate related legal documents.

Other Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Working directly with firm clients on issues and litigation related to water rights law and related matters;
  • Adjudicating water rights in water court on behalf of clients, including preparing and filing pleadings, negotiating settlements, preparing cases for trial, and litigating cases in court;
  • Attending and leading client board and membership meetings;
  • Advising clients regarding: the purchase, sale or lease of water rights; the acquisition and development of water storage facilities and other water infrastructure; and the impact of proposed regulations or legislation on client goals and assets.
  • Drafting legal opinions; preparing and reviewing contracts, deeds, pleadings, leases, and other legal documents;
  • Interpreting statutes, codes, ordinances, resolutions, and policies impacting client’s water rights and water rights portfolio development;
  • Assigning or delegating work activities and projects to support staff;
  • May supervise or provide day to day direction for a legal assistant.

Requirements:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school; and Admission to practice in the State of Colorado.
  • 1 – 3 years of relevant water law experience as an attorney, experience with water court, litigation experience; real estate transaction experience strongly preferred.
  • In lieu of this experience, the Firm will consider candidates with a desire and passion for Colorado water law.
  • Knowledge of the 1969 Colorado Adjudication and Administration Act of Colorado and/or other water law and related procedures strongly preferred.

Legal Assistant

We are currently seeking a Legal Assistant to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with 2 – 5 years of legal assistant experience. Primary responsibilities include assisting attorneys through the performance of complex secretarial/administrative duties including scheduling, pulling, saving, and filing pleadings, file management, and overall office support as needed. In this position you may support  1 – 3 attorneys, communicate directly with the Court, clients, and experts, and provide additional support when others are out of the office.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Schedule meetings and deadlines and manage attorney calendars, including sending invitations and reminders when needed;
  • Assisting lawyers in preparing, drafting, and compiling documents for transactional closings, depositions, hearings, trials, and conferences, proofread and edit drafts;
  • File pleadings using the Colorado Court CCE system;
  • Pull pleadings and court filings and be responsible for independently filing the pleadings, calendaring deadlines, and providing copies of pertinent pleadings to the client and their expert engineers;
  • Create attorney time entries and invoicing for clients;
  • Preparing documents for notarization;
  • Assist with preparing exhibits, charts and diagrams to display information;
  • Assist in legal research and gather pertinent factual and supportive information;
  • Assist with case management and drafting court motions or pleadings;
  • Attend and support attorneys at trial;
  • Save, organize, and manage records electronically;
  • General office support including answering phones, checking supply inventories, and requesting re-orders, making service calls, sending, and delivering mail, scanning, making copies, greeting clients, and ensuring office is neat and orderly for clients;
  • Basic communication with opposing counsel, or opposing counsel’s support staff, such as for scheduling meetings and providing or requesting documents.

Education, Skills & Experience

  • Paralegal or legal assistant certification or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience in water law, real property, or trusts and estates preferred, but not required.
  • 2 – 5 years’ experience as a legal assistant.
  • Excellent MS Office skills.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • High degree of discretion and confidentiality.

The Firm offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a compensation range of $26 to $30 per hour, depending on experience.
